Mother Christiana Nelson had the vision to call a few friends and family members to a prayer breakfast on January 9, 2016. The prayer breakfast was held at Morningside Municipal Center in Morningside, Maryland. Mother Christiana Nelson reached out to her co-worker and friend, the Reverend James A. Skipper Jr., to bring an encouraging word at the first prayer breakfast.
Reverend Skipper continued to preach at each prayer breakfast held Bi-weekly thereafter. He intended to extend full participation to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This, in return, will give disabled people and people who work with the disabled population the opportunity to attend services without any reservations.
God placed it on Pastor Skipper's heart to call a meeting inviting all those who participated and contributed to the prayer breakfasts to form “House of the Redeemed Church Outreach Ministry, Inc.”
The experience of disabilities exists in all racial, social, and sexual age groups. This experience may be familiar to most families, and the body of Christ is not complete without people from all areas of life, including people with all types of disabilities.
In addition, inadequacies exist in the church and society regarding concerns for the rights of people with disabilities, utilization of talents, and full participation within the life of the church and the community.
